Kadaga Lashes Out At Police, Army Over Controversial Murder Of Makerere Student, Rampant Killings

The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga (pictured) has lashed out at both Police and Army over brutality meted on Ugandans by Local Defence Unit (LDU), with calls to explain the circumstances under which former Makerere University student died.

Kadaga directed the Ministry of Internal Affairs to explain circumstances surrounding the death of Emmanuel Tegu, a third year student of Veterinary Medicine at Makerere University.

“It is time government explained to Ugandans what they have done to LDUs that have killed so many people. Why is it that no LDU has been prosecuted?” Kadaga said.

The Speaker’s demands followed a concern raised by Leader of Opposition, Betty Aol, who asked Government to table a report on how Tegu was controversially murdered.

“These LDUs have been tampering with lives of people of Uganda and we had one person killed by people in Oyam. These killings are too much. Why are they ill trained that in case somebody isn’t doing a correct thing can’t they be apprehended. We are scared because we are headed for elections, when you give arms to people who aren’t well trained,” Aol said.

She added: “Very many people have died and we have always demanded for reports, but it remains just like that. Can we demand that a serious report be tabled before Parliament?”

Ann Adeke (National Youth Representative) said that although Police issued a report, the report given was full of inconsistencies and called for concrete explanation on the death.
