Members of Parliament who are locked down in Kampala due to the COVID-19 guidelines issued by President Yoweri Museveni are worried of losing their seats after it emerged that their opponents are supplying relief food items in the constituencies.
During yesterday’s plenary sitting, Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga called on Government to intervene, saying there is need for a leveled ground in the political space.
She said although political gatherings were banned by President Yoweri Museveni to mitigate the spread of Coronovirus, there are scrupulous individuals abusing these directives upcountry.
“I have received reports that as we are here obeying the Presidential directives, quarantining ourselves in the city of Kampala, there are people moving around in constituencies not only conducting meetings, but distributing food,” Kadaga said.
“Our political opponents are busy distributing food and telling voters that MPs have abandoned you. This is a matter Government must take seriously. If the President said there are no political or religious meetings but some few people in the country are continuing against our interest, this must stop,” Kadaga added.
