Uganda’s Electoral Commission has revealed that it does not charge any nomination fees or registration of those intending to participate in the 2020 General Elections.
This position was made by the EC Publicist, Jotham Taremwa during a Twitter chat on Friday morning in which he also said that the intention is not to persuade but inform Ugandans to exercise their right to participate in the electoral process.
“It should be noted that EC doesn’t set money for nomination or registration to stand for office. That provision is in the law, and all we do is Implement the law,” Taremwa said.
Last week, the EC launched the General Update of the voters’ register, an exercise that is expected to end on 11th December 2019.
On the question of whether the time set aside by the commission is enough to enable Ugandans abroad who may be interested in participating, Taremwa said;
“This is the time for this process. We have timelines we work with, and these have to be met. Time is not on our side, as elections for special groups start in 2020.”
He also stated that those who registered with NIRA do not have to do it again as this exercise is only for people who have never registered.
Taremwa, however, said that; “Having a National ID doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you will take part in the election, you still need to go and register as a voter.”
