Uganda’s Vice President, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has challenged graduates to use their acquired skills to transform society through solving challenges faced by people.
The Vice President made the remarks while officiating at the 18th graduation ceremony of Uganda Management Institute (UMI) held scientifically at UMI Kampala campus on Friday 18th August 2020.
Over 3,354 students attained degrees and diplomas in various disciplines for the 2018/2019 Academic year.
The Vice President tasked graduates to change work attitudes, be innovative and improve services delivery in their organizations and society using their skills.
“Apply the knowledge and skills received to improve the quality of service delivery for your organizations. I am confident that the skills will enable you to change work attitudes, be more creative and innovative to address contemporary challenges,” he said.
He told the PhD graduands to continue with research that will find solutions to society aimed at social economic transformation.
“It’s not enough to poses a PhD, the question should be what’s the value of your PhD in providing solutions to society? It’s the beginning of further research for social-economic transformation,” he said.
The Chancellor, UMI, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire highlighted the need to take advantage of technology and science methods to do work while urging graduands to adjust to the new normal ways of operation.
She called upon graduates to transfer knowledge and skills of management attained at UMI to make decisions and solve problems in context of their work.
The Director General, UMI, Dr James Nkata expressed an urgent need of new governance skills to steer population through adopting new leadership different from the traditional ways of operation. He said that in the new 2020-25 Strategic Plan, UMI recognised new models of improving leadership capacity. He called upon partners to implement the strategic plan.
“The strategic plan has fused the 4th Industrial Revolution components including advanced artificial Intelligence, robotics, and genetic engineering among other components,” he said
