A young woman in Mukono has narrowly survived death after being strangled by her boyfriend for the alleged theft of his savings. The woman, identified as Christine Amaso, was picked up unconscious from her rented room in Kikooza Cell at Mukono Central Division in Mukono Municipality where she has been residing with her errant boyfriend, Livingstone Mwesigwa alias ‘Mutooro’, a grasshopper vendor.

Residents rushed to the room after Mwesigwa handed over himself to Mukono Police Division on Monday evening indicating that he had strangled his girlfriend to death for alleged theft of his savings.

He directed the police to his rented room but fortunately, they found the woman struggling for her life and rushed her to Mukono General Hospital.

Mwesigwa, who didn’t reveal how much money the woman had stolen only told police that he lost his cool when he found his savings for the last two months missing. Fred Ssekiranda, the Kikooza Defense Secretary told our reporter that the couple has for so long been known for quarreling and being involved in minor fights. He, however, says that they did not expect their fellow resident to develop intentions of ending the life of his companion.

“His report to police confirms that he was determined to kill her. He would have opted for separation if talks had failed. But also, we are here as leaders to listen to people’s concerns ranging from different aspects. Ending life is not the solution,” Ssekiranda noted. Aggrey Sseruwo, the Officer in Charge of Operation at Mukono Police Division, says that they have tentatively slapped attempted murder charges against Mwesigwa as they continue to monitor the situation of the victim.
