Uganda’s Unit Cost Of Road Construction Is 30% More Expensive Compared To Other Countries In East & Central Africa

Uganda’s unit cost of road construction and maintenance is 30% more expensive than the other countries in East and central African regions.

This is contained in a study report of the unit cost of Road construction tabled before the parliamentary committee on physical Infrastructure committee presided over by the deputy chairperson Tony Awany.

The report was tabled by the minister of state for Works, Musa Ecweru while responding to the committee members’ concern over the high unit cost of road construction and maintenance which is currently affecting the government effort to work on poor road infrastructure in the country.

The report attributes the high cost to increased prices of input materials like cement, oils, lime and electricity.

It also blamed on imported inflation, high interest rates, delayed payment to contractors and use of foreign contractors due lack of enough skilled local contractors.

The minister of state for Works, Musa Ecweru said that this report will enhance transparency in the road physical infrastructure construction.
