The Ugandan delegation is led by Dr. Gerald Kyalo, Commissioner for the Coffee Development Department at MAAIF
A delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has started its week-long coffee value addition mission in China with a strategic visit to the new Consulate General premises in Guangzhou.
Led by Dr. Gerald Kyalo, Commissioner for the Coffee Development Department, the delegation was received by Ambassador Judyth Nsababera, who provided an on-site briefing on the progress of the new consulate building and the planned establishment of the Uganda Coffee Laboratory and Coffee House.
According to MAAIF, the proposed Coffee Laboratory will serve as a flagship facility for the promotion of Uganda Coffee in the Chinese market, supporting quality assurance, product development, cupping, and market education. This initiative marks a major step in strengthening Uganda’s coffee visibility and competitiveness in Asia.
MAAIF figures show that exports to China have been increasing over the years, driven by China’s increasing demand for quality coffee. For instance, in 2018, Uganda exported 33,000 bags of coffee to China, 66,000 bags in 2019 and 83,000 bags in 2020.
Reports further indicate that exports have surged by 190% as of March 2025 and significant deals (around $3 million) secured at events like the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai. Strategic initiatives, including awareness tours and partnerships with Chinese companies, aim to connect Ugandan farmers directly to the vast Chinese market, positioning China as a key partner for Uganda’s coffee sector growth and value addition.
