Uganda Elected To Lead East African Magistrates, Judges Association

The East African Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association –EAMJA draws membership from the organizational bodies representing Magistrates And Judges in the three East African countries, namely; Kenya Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association, KMJA, Uganda Judicial Officers’ Association- UJOA, and the Judges’ and Magistrates’ Association of Tanzania –JMAT and the recent addition of Judicial officers from Rwanda.

The Association’s mission is to Promote, enhance and Protect the Rule of Law, and accessibility to Justice for all, through harmonization of the Judicial Systems and the development of the Capacities of Judicial Officers in East Africa.

It was while in the ongoing four days 19th General Assembly in Kigali Rwanda, that Justice John Eudes Keitirima, the head of the Family Division of the High Court of Uganda who was unopposed, was voted as President of the Association.

Keitirima has been the Vice President of the Association.



Other members of Council from Uganda are: Stella Paculal Okwong a Magistrate Grade One from Entebbe Court ) as Deputy General Secretary while Justice Tadeo Asiimwe the President Uganda Judicial Officers Association and Janeva Natukunda the Deputy Registrar of the Land Division are Council members.

The outgoing President of the regional Judicial Officers body, Sophia Wambura from Tanzania has handed over to Keitirima in a ceremony witnessed by Rwandan Chief Justice, Dr Faustin Ntezilyayo.

Also at the Conference which is being held under the theme “East African Community Courts efficiency in adjudicating emerging cross border Issues: challenges and strengths, it was agreed that Uganda hosts the 2023 EAMJA Conference and General Meeting.
