Traders In Busega Refuse To Occupy New Market

State of the Roads at the Newly Constructed Busega Market

Traders in Busega have refused to occupy the newly constructed market. The market was constructed under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Program (MATIP).

Last week the State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Kabuye Kyofatogabye asked the vendors to occupy the market.

He said that a section of the market will be completed when the vendors are operating in the new market.

However, traders have refused to occupy the market saying that it does not meet the standards.

Charles Bugembe, the Market Chairperson says that the access road to the market is in a poor state.

Bugembe said that traders will only occupy the market when Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Local Governments implement the Prime Minister’s orders.

In August Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja ordered the Ministry of Local Government to construct all feeder roads to the Busega Market. Nabbanja who was touring the market also ordered the contractor to fix all the defects in a period of two months.

Bugembe said that when it rains the parking on the rooftop leaks which leads to flooding.

Dissan Kiryowa the General Secretary of the Market said there are many markets in Nateete, Buloba, and others that compete with the Busega market. He argues that when the markets start operating in their current state, their customers will resort to other markets.

But Nalwanga Lwanga, another trader blames the market leadership for influencing traders to defy the Prime Minister’s orders.

She says that the protest could lead to the destruction of property and loss of lives.

Efforts to reach out to the Ministry of Local Government were in vain as the spokesperson could not answer calls.
