Three staff from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and two UPDF soldiers have been killed by suspected cattle rustlers in Moroto District.
According to Agnes Alaba, the Acting Director Mineral in the Ministry, the incident occurred on Monday evening when the geologists were carrying out geochemical sampling in Lotisan Sub County. She says that the Ministry had sent the team to do mapping in Karamoja after the recently concluded airborne mineral survey.
One of the victims has been identified as Richard Kiggwe, a geologist. The others whose identities remain unknown include an intern student from Makerere University, a local liaison officer, and a casual labourer.
John Robert Adupa, the LCIII Chairperson for Lotisan Sub County says that leaders in the area were not informed about the presence of the officials.
Michael Longole, the Police Spokesperson of Mt. Moroto Region says that the bodies were recovered by security personnel and have been taken to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital.
He says that the army and police have been dispatched to the area to gather more information about the incident.
