Tension In Kampala As MPs Prepare To Debate Age Limit

Heavy security deployment at Parliament of Uganda ahead of proposal that constitution be amended to lift the presidential age limit.

At Parliament, the deployment has increased,with all the four entrances fully secured by security. An armoured vehicle at two entrances, with security personnel, while other gates have security doubled.

Kampala Member of Parliament Mohammed Nsereko says that he is mobilising and talking to MPs. He has changed his stance from violence, to persuasion. According to him, even at the last moment, some MPs are going the team against age limit. He says he would not go violent today.

However, asked the second time, Nsereko says, “Just leave it to us.”

Earlier, Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago was whisked away from his home by Police who had taken positions outside.

Police said they had information that Lukwago would lead protests against scrapping the age limit for standing for president.
