The late Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile
President Yoweri Museveni is yet to appoint a Governor for Bank of Uganda to replace the fallen Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, but he has assured the leadership of Parliament that he is still thinking about his choice and action will be taken.
The revelation was made by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa to concerned lawmakers about the delay to appoint the BoU Governor.
The Deputy Speaker’s remarks followed a concern raised by Joseph Ssewungu (Kalungu West) who asked Tayebwa to direct the Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua to remind the President about the vacancy at the Central Bank, saying his insistence on having the slot filled isn’t because he wants some members of his family to fill the position, but rather to ensure efficiency in the running of the Central Bank.
“We might sit here thinking he (President) still thinking about it but of course you should remember about his age, he might have forgotten that Bank of Uganda is missing the Governor, so if possible with your guidance, the Chief Whip could remind the President that this country has no substantive Governor,” said Ssewungu.
The Deputy Speaker told off Ssewungu that age doesn’t impose a limit on one’s capability to think and went on to assure him that the vacancy at Central Bank was one of the issues discussed in a meeting held between the President and the top leadership of Parliament.
“What I can assure you is that I promised to take the matter to the President. There were two issues, human rights commission and Bank of Uganda and the meeting between the President, Speaker and I, we raised these matters and human rights commission; he took action and he promised he will take action, so I am sure the President will take action,” said Tayebwa.
The development comes at the time it has marked one year and two days since the passing on of former Bank of Uganda Governor, Prof. Emmanuel Mutebile who passed died on 23rd January 2022 in Nairobi Hospital after succumbing to diabetes and other complications.
Mutebile ascended to the throne as Central Bank Governor in 2001 a position he held until his death and since then, Deputy Governor, Michael Atingi-Ego has been at the helm of the Central Bank for all this time.
