Some of the NUP supporters arrested in one million match
Several of the NUP supporters in Kampala have been arrested by the Uganda Police Force. This was done as the security forces engaged in the dispersing of Ugandans who engaged in the one Million match to Entebbe International Airport.
The supporters to welcome back NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu also known as Bobi Wine as he returned from official party activities in South Africa.
More than a million people had converged along Entebbe road and different streets with in Kampala to welcome back the leading opposition figure.
Amongst the arrested were National Unity Platform – NUP Mobilizers including Trevor Yosia, Richard Jimbo, and Ssekanjako Julius Mutatya, amongst others.
Sources from the Uganda Police in Kampala told this website that the October 5th, 2023 arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation to ascertain the main reasons why they were organizing and participating in the one million match and yet they have for long not been organizing such as Bobi Wine returned from foreign trips.
“There must have been a sinister objective. For instance, we have severally been notified on the activities of a one Ssekanjako Julius Mutatya who has been mobilizing people for the activity in the areas of Kasangati Town Council where the principal has a stronghold. What is so special about his (Bobi Wine) return,” a crime intelligence source told this website.
The arrested are now being held at Kibuye, Katwe, Nateete, Entebbe, Kajjansi among other Police Stations.
On October 5th, several Ugandans converged on the streets in Kampala and along Entebbe road to welcome back Mr. Kyagulanyi from the South African foreign trip where he addressed a number of NUP issues. However, more than 180 supporters were arrested.
Several Human Rights Organizations have claimed, many of the arrested including the local Journalists who had moved to the airport to cover the events were arrested and allegedly tortured. None of the arrested have been taken to court for prosecution.
They are yet to be charged with the organization of an unlawful assembly contrary to the Public Order Management Act.
