NSSF Probe: Byarugaba’s Phone Handed Over To CID For Further Investigations After Contradictory Statements

The former NSSF Managing Director, Richard Byarugaba (pictured) is in trouble after Parliament’s select committee handed over his phone  to CID to carry out further investigations on the contradicting information that was submitted to the committee.

The Committee also handed over to the CID the mobile phone of  NSSF’s Chief Finance Officer Stephen Mwanje.

This is after the committee found that the management of the fund spent  Shs1.8 billion on corporate social responsibility, but there was no accountability of how the funds were spent.

The chairperson of the select committee Mwine Mpaka tasked the former Managing director  Byarugaba to explain how the funds were utilized, noting that everyone they have engaged on the matter was only aware of  Shs800m .

Byarugaba informed the committee its true the 800m was disbursed to the unions and says that with the help of the finance department, they generated ways on how the Shs 1 billion that was given to board to make them relevant would be spent.

Byarugaba’s remarks were refuted by Mwanje who noted that he was not aware of the money but Byarugaba produced a WhatsApp message on his phone showing that Mwanje was aware of the money and he helped them with accountability.

Mwanje informed the committee that he does not remember sending any such a message to his former boss and on scrutiny of his phone the committee realized all his messages on the said date had been deleted.

This prompted the chairperson of the committee Mwine Mpaka to direct CID to take both phones and interrogate the authenticity of the message brought by Byarugaba.
