NARO Launches Shs380m Mobile Apps

Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) has launched mobile Apps to ease access to information on agricultural research.

The NARO digital platforms were launched on Saturday morning by Dr. Imelda N. Kashaija,  the Agricultural Technology Promotion’s Deputy Director General at the Uganda Media Center.

The platforms launched include: NARO SMS Platform, 3mobile apps available on google play store (naro maize, naro beans& naro cassava) , UARISTS and the Seed Traceability system.

According to Charlotte Kemigyisha, the NARO Public Relations Officer, the US$100,000 investment in these online platforms will go a long way in easing access to agricultural research information by various stakeholders.

NARO stakeholders that don’t have smart phones can still access this information via USSD by going to the message option on their phones:
Type NARO➡space➡question➡ send to 8888.

She added in a statement released on Saturday that the messages which will cost 220/= each are viewed as the best alternative to traveling long distances to access vital information and advisory services in agriculture.

The Ministry of Agriculture is rolling out an e-voucher system for procurement of seeds. So once the 2 platforms are integrated it will help trace and track fake seed/agro input dealers.
