The President of the Republic Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially opened the African Water Congress and Exhibition at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Monday 24th February 2020.
While addressing the 20th African Water Association (AFWA) International Congress at Serena International Conference Centre, the President congratulated Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, the Managing Director of National Water and Sewerage Corporation ( NWSC) for assuming office as the new chair of AFWA.
AfWA is the leading professional association for Water and Sanitation in Africa and has over 100 institutional members from over 40 countries.
“I also congratulate him for authoring a book, “Sustaining High Performing Public Enterprises”, which I have launched today,” the President said in a tweet message.
In his speech the President said “Water issues must be addressed holistically with other issues like the environment, health, income generation and electrification. It should not be handled in isolation. For example, unless we address energy questions, people will destroy forests and affect rain formation”.
He added: “It is the same concern with household incomes, fighting corruption, getting our masses out of traditional to commercial farming, stabilizing land productivity through irrigation and security. We must address all these to achieve equilibrium.”
The Minister of State for the Environment Beatrice Anywar, the Board and Management of NWSC, AfWA top executive and members, officials from the Government of Uganda, Development partners among other guests attended the event.
The Minister of State for Water, Ronald Kibuule thanked the Government of Uganda and the AfWA fraternity for the immense support they have accorded the corporation throughout the years.
The NWSC Board Chair Dr. Eng Christopher Ebal gave a performance brief of the organization and reiterated NWSC’s commitment towards excellent customer service, water and Sewerage services for all.
