President Yoweri Museveni has said women empowerment will solve domestic violence and abuse of women in marriages. The President made the remarks on Sunday while presiding over the International women`s Day celebrations at Malukhu Administration Grounds, Mbale District.
“In my view, the major enabler to women empowerment is through economic emancipation,” Museveni said, adding: “A scenario where the husband is the sole bread winner, the wife will hesitate to report a case of abuse to police because once he is put away, her thoughts are on how she will survive.”
In order to eliminate the girl child economic dependency, Museveni said his Government shall increase funding to the women and youth through OWEC (Operation Wealth Creation).
“In terms of sensitisation, we should tell the men that beating a woman is cowardly,” Museveni said.
He also launched a program dubbed “spotlight initiative” supported by the EU and UN aimed at eliminating gender based violence.
