Teso Widows’ Development Association has received a tractor from President Yoweri Museveni to support over 36,000 widows in Teso Sub Region. The donation is in fulfillment of the President’s pledge to the widows last year.
In November, the Vice President, Jessica Alupo met the Teso widows, religious leaders and other groups at Soroti University who presented to her a number of issues regarding their respective groups.
According to Beatrice Omese, the Chairperson of Teso Widows’ Development Association, who presented requests for the tractor, financial support to boost their savings and the nursing school under construction in Soroti.
Omese says that the handover of the tractor comes second on the list of pleas made to the president since they received a boost of Shillings 50 million for their SACCO.
She told the Vice President, who had come to handover the tractor that the pending pledge if honoured, will enable the operationalization of the widow’s nursing school.
Christine Emaju, the widow’s representative from Kaberamaido, said that the tractor has been their major concern to enable the widows to plough and cultivate on time. She said the tractor will help boost food security at the household level and commercial agriculture.
While handing over the tractor, Alupo asked the widows to make the best use of the tractor for social-economic transformation to be realized.
Teso Widows’ Development Association started in 2003 with 200 members mainly in Soroti district and Municipality then. It has since grown to cover all eleven districts in Teso with membership exceeding 36,000 widows.
