Museveni, Canadian Prime Minister Discuss Bi-Lateral Relations Amid COVID-19

President Yoweri Museveni and Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau held talks and agreed to continue strengthening the relationship between Canada and Uganda.

President Museveni said via his Twitter handle that “It was a very fruitful engagement. I thank Your Excellency for the time. We look forward to defeating this pandemic and strengthening ties between our two countries.”

Using his Twitter handle, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said that the two heads of state talked about COVID-19 and its economic impacts, as well as the importance of working together to help our economies bounce back while also keeping people safe.

According to the Canadian Prime Minister, the duo exchanged views about their respective national efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and protect the health, safety, and economic well-being of their citizens. 

Trudeau noted the importance of responding to the virus in a manner that protects the most vulnerable groups in society and upholds human rights. 

Further, the two leaders noted the devastating economic impacts of the pandemic for many countries and the importance of appropriate development financing to help countries bring back growth in key sectors. They discussed ways to continue strengthening the Canada-Uganda bilateral relationship and to advance shared priorities such as trade and investment, and international coordination to restore global economic activity.

Prime Minister Trudeau thanked President Museveni for Uganda’s ongoing help to repatriate Canadians seeking to return home during this crisis.

“COVID-19 is a rapidly evolving global challenge. The Government of Canada is working closely with local, provincial, territorial, and international partners to minimize its health, economic, and social impacts in Canada and around the world,” said Trudeau.

The development comes at the time the North American nation that has a population of 37million people has recorded 79,114 Coronovirus cases, 5,912 deaths and 40,050 recoveries, while Uganda has 260 cases, 63 recoveries and no registered deaths.
