Mob Torches Vehicle Suspected of Transporting Meat from Stolen Cattle

An irate mob in Nakaseke district has set ablaze a vehicle suspected of transporting stolen cattle. The incident happened in Bulyake village in Kasangombe Sub County in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The pickup truck registration number UAP 202S was transporting the meat of three cattle and five people onboard. Trouble started after thugs raided villages in

Kapeeka Sub County on Saturday night and raided several animals. They reportedly slaughtered the animals and loaded them on a vehicle for transportation.

After learning about the raid, residents raised alarm in the wee hours of Sunday morning. This led to a search of the vehicle transporting the meat. Some residents reported the theft at Kapeeka police station. The officers also tipped off their colleagues at Nakaseke police station to spread dragnets.

The suspects had already passed Nakaseke by the time the police launched a chase. However, the officers alerted their colleagues at Kasangombe Police Station who also joined the chase. They managed to intercept the pickup and shot its tyres in an attempt to stop the driver in vain.

This prompted residents of Bulyake to intercept the vehicle. Speaking to Uganda Radio Network (URN), the Livingstone Gitta, Bulyake village Local Council 1 chairperson, says that this prompted the suspected thugs to abandon the vehicle in the middle of the road around 7 am and flee for their dear lives.

The development comes shortly after residents of Butuntumula Sub County in Luweero district reported the theft of more than 50 cows in a space of one month.
