Makerere University has asked Parliament for UGX33.687Bn as additional funds to facilitate improvement of Government students feeding allowances, while Makerere University Business School (MUBS) made a request for additional UGX52.825Bn to meet its infrastructural gaps.
The request was made by Remigio Achia, Vice Chairperson, Parliament’s Budget Committee while presenting the report on the 2026/27 National Budget Framework Paper recently.
“The Committee observes that the University, still faces significant challenges and requires additional funds to bridge the funding gap of UGX33.687Bn of which UGX3bn is the funding gap under renovation of students residences; Ushs8.394 to bridge the gap under Government sponsored students food and living out allowances; UGX3.923bn under educational materials,” Achia noted.
Additionally, Makerere University also sought for additional UGX7.55Bn to outscore cleaning and security guard services; Ugx10Bn under research and innovation and UGX820Million to complete the student hostel at Buyana Stock Farm.
Makerere University also seeks approval for its request to transfer the amount of UGX1.1Bn currently provided under the improvement of labs in the development budget to the non – wage budget under teaching and training to support the procurement of laboratory reagents and related materials for laboratory practical.
The Budget Committee recommended, “The approval of the University’s request to transfer the amount of UGXl.1bn currently provided under the improvement of labs in the development budget to be the non – wage budget under teaching and training to support the procurement of laboratory reagents and related materials for laboratory practicals.”
Parliament also observed that the business University has a number of challenges in regards to the institutions infrastructure development Project, after the top Management reported that the MUBS Infrastructure Development project approved two projects and has been allocated UGX1.881bn, thus prompting calls to have the additional funding of UGX52.825bn to support the infrastructural Development projects.
Achia recommended, “The committee recommends that the Ministry of Finance allocates additional funding of UGX52.82Sbn to support the infrastructural Development projects. The Committee also recommends that the Ministry of Finance allocate UGX2.58Bn for staff recruitment and promotions, Ugx1.6bn for staff Development, UGX489Million for Research & Publications and UGX1.404Bn for ICT requirements.”
