Kasese ADF Attack: 37 Bodies Recovered

The UPDF says they have discovered 37 bodies of students who were shot and burned by suspected Allied Democratic Force Rebels in Kasese.

Earlier reports indicated that the rebels had killed 25 students at Rubiriha Secondary School in Kasese District near the border with DRC.

UPDF Spokesman, Brigadier Felix Kulaigye in a statement issued on Saturday afternoon said 37 bodies had been recovered and taken to Bwera Hospital mortuary.

He said eight casualties/ survivors had also been taken to Bwera government hospital.

Three people were rescued, while six people are believed to have been taken captive by the rebels. Other reports indicated that 38 students were killed.

According to Kulaigye, the UPDF has embarked to rescue six students who were used by the rebels to carry looted food items towards Virunga Mountain in DRC.

He confirmed that the Chief of Defence Force, Gen, Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, and his Land Force Commander, Lt. Gen, Kayanja Muhanga had traveled to the area for an on-pot assessment.

The opposition National Unity Platform in a statement sent heartfelt condolence to the families that lost dear ones in the attack. “This morning, we come together in a time of deep sorrow and grief as we receive the devastating news of the tragic incident at Lhubiriha Secondary School in Kasese District. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends who have been shattered by the unimaginable loss. We stand with you in your grief, and we offer our heartfelt condolences” said a statement posted on Twitter.
