Government plans to confiscate and ban all imported fake phones.
This was revealed by the State minister for ICT and National Guidance, Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku while appearing before the parliamentary committee on ICT chaired by Budiope East MP, Moses Magogo.
This is after the committee members tasked Kabbyanga to explain why there are fake phones on market.
The committee was handling a petition filed by Kawempe South MP, Bashir Kazibwe about the poor service and network quality of telecommunication service providers.
Kabbyanga says that the ministry of ICT is working with the National Bureau of Standards and Uganda Communications Commission using the detecting machines they secured and test all the phones on market to eliminate the fake ones.
The Minister says that the fake phones once impounded from shops shall be burnt and later all fake phones will be stopped from entering the Ugandan market.
Magogo asked government to consider compelling the telecommunication companies to have same inter-connection rates to avoid charging people different rates while calling on other networks.
He added that people are carrying more than one phone to save costs while making calls, saying if there is one inter connection rate this will not happen.
