Uganda’s Ministry of Gender has submitted draft agreements for labor relations with the States of Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
This brings to six, the number of countries that have committed to protect the rights of Ugandans working abroad after similar agreements with Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
Gender Minister Hajat Janat Mukwaya told journalists at the government Media Centre that the agreements will be used to ensure that Ugandans enjoy absolute rights even while working abroad. The statement comes at the backdrop of reports that 48 Ugandans had lost their lives in Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait over the last nine months.
The report compiled jointly by Parliament’s committees on Gender and Foreign Affairs shows that most of the Ugandans who were working as maids, guards and drivers, committed suicide. Several others have reportedly been tortured, raped, burnt, and beheaded.
