Government Lifts Anthrax Quarantine

The government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries has lifted the quarantine that was imposed on three Bugisu districts following the outbreak of Anthrax. In May this year, the government banned the sale of animals and animal products in Bududa, Manafwa, and Namisindwa districts.

The move was aimed at containing the spread of anthrax to both animals and humans. Now, Rose Anna, the commissioner of animal health in the Ministry of Agriculture has written to lift the quarantine in Bududa and other surrounding districts.

Felix Odongo, the Bududa district Production Officer has confirmed the development and urged the public to continue following preventive measures like not consuming unboiled milk and half-cooked meat. He has also advised them to report any suspected cases to the nearby sub-county veterinary officer.

Center for Disease Control -CDC describes Anthrax as a very serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis. It occurs naturally in soil and commonly affects domestic and wild animals around the world. It infects humans who come into contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.
