General Mugisha Muntu, the President of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party has accused President, Yoweri Museveni of lying on the proposal to lift the presidential age limit from the constitution.
During an interview recently, Museveni dismissed the ongoing debate on the proposed constitutional amendment to lift the presidential age limit as speculative, saying the National Resistance Movement-NRM party hadn’t sanction the discussion. Museveni called the debate on the presidential age limit a rumor, questioning what the proposal was and where it was.
The matter came to the fore after reports emerged showing that a section of National Resistance Movement – NRM party legislators has mooted a plan to amend article 102(b) of the 1995 constitution. Under the current provision in article 102(b) of the 1995 constitution, President Museveni wouldn’t be eligible to contest for the seat. Born in 1944 and in power since 1986, Museveni will hit the limit before the next presidential election.
Article 102(b) states that a person is qualified for election as President if that person is not less than 35 years and not more than 75 years. However, General Mugisha Muntu, the FDC party president, says Museveni is playing mind games with Ugandans, stating that NRM MPs or the party cannot start a debate without his approval.
According to Muntu, Museveni should direct his party members to shut up on the matter if he is to be trusted.
