The Dairy Development Authority (DDA) has revealed an increase in prices of milk in the central and eastern regions of Uganda.
According DDA, in August, the Central region experienced an increase of Shs 175 at the farm gate to Shs 1, 275. This is despite the fact that retail prices remained stable at Shs 2, 000 per liter.
In the Eastern region, prices per liter went up at the farm gate by Shs 159 to Shs 1,530. Prices per liter also went up by Shs 216 to Shs 2,058.
However, the north-eastern and northern regions of the country went dry in terms of prices.
For instance, farm gate prices on a liter of milk went down by Shs 150 to Shs 1,050. Retail prices on a lire also went down by Shs 50 to Shs 1,850.
This is also seen in the northern region. Although at retail shops a liter remained at Shs 2, 000 in the north, farm gate prices dropped by Shs 145 to Shs 1,200. In the south-western region, farm gate prices dropped by Shs 69 to 1,194. Retail prices on a liter remained at Shs 1,585.
Prices in the midwestern region remained stable at Shs 1,250 at the farm gate and Shs 2, 000 per liter at retail shops.
Data shows that Uganda produced 2.81 billion liters of milk in 2021. Of these, 800 million liters were consumed within Uganda, with over 2 billion liters available for export annually.
During the 2019/2020 financial year, Uganda earned US$131.5 million from milk exports.
