Uganda’s football team, The Uganda Cranes and its skipper, Goalkeeper, Denis Onyango, have been nominated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Africa’s football governing body for the CAF Awards 2018.
Onyango who plays for South African based Mamelodi Sundowns received a nod in the category of African Player of the year while the Uganda Cranes were nominated in the Team of the Year category.
The Cranes qualified mid this month for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be held in Cameroon for the second time in a row after a 40 year absence.
Onyango helped the team qualify without conceding a goal.
He will have to battle it out with European based players like Nigeria and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Mohammed Salah and Naby Keita who both play for Liverpool and Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Party (Ghana).
The Awards Gala, to honour footballers and officials who distinguished themselves during the year under review, will be held on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 in Dakar, Senegal.
Uganda Cranes was were nominated alongside Kenya, Mauritania and AFCON new boys, Madagascar.
