CNOOC Launches The Kingfisher Bunyoro Youth Engagement Tournament

As part of its corporate strategy to promote the sport talents and skills of the youths in the wider Bunyoro Community, CNOOC Uganda Limited has announced the launch of the Kingfisher Bunyoro Youth Engagement in collaboration with Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom.

The launched tournaments shall spread throughout the whole month of December 2024.

The selection of the teams was undertaken in partnership with Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom that supported to identify and select youth teams from the 15 counties of the 8 districts of Kikuube, Hoima, Masindi, Buliisa, Kiryandongo, Kakumiro, Kibaale and Kagadi. 25 matches shall be played during the preliminaries and 3 shall be played during the finals making a total of 28 matches.

Under the theme, “Building Partnerships through Sports for Sustainable Development”, the initiative seeks to; i) mobilize communities, ii) harness youth talent; and iii) strengthen bonds in Bunyoro region. The partnership of CNOOC with the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom underscores the strong partnership between CNOOC and the Bunyoro Sub-Region that hosts the Kingfisher Project.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Ma Peixin, Vice President CNOOC Uganda Limited said that, “This event  shall demonstrate the power of sports as a unifying force, bringing together diverse members of the Bunyoro community, partners, and stakeholders. Through sports, we’re not just playing games, we’re building futures, fostering dialogue, and showcasing how collaboration can lead to sustainable development. CNOOC is proud to spearhead in this initiative. We firmly believe that building partnerships through such meaningful activities not only strengthens community ties but also lays a strong foundation for long-term progress of the Oil and Gas industry.”

Andrew Byakutuga Ateenyi, Prime Minister, Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, reaffirmed that, “CNOOC’s continuous support through initiatives like this is invaluable. It’s about more than just the sport; but also preparing our youth for opportunities in the oil and gas sector and beyond.”

Since 2012, CNOOC Uganda Limited has implemented various corporate social responsibility projects in the fields of education, health, sports and disaster times. These efforts underscore CNOOC Uganda Limited’s holistic approach to community investment, ensuring that every initiative not only supports immediate needs but also contributes to the long-term socio-economic development of the region.

CNOOC Uganda Limited reaffirms its commitment to the efficient and effective development of the Kingfisher Development Area in a healthy, safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.
