China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has revealed that the Bunyoro Amasaza Tournament that were called off following the outbreak of Covid-19 will return next year.
However, this will depend on the trend of the pandemic.
The revelation was made on Thursday by Zakalia Lubega, Head of Corporate Affairs at CNOOC Uganda Limited during a media engagement, after concerns were raised on why the tournament hasn’t resumed despite Government opening up the sports sector in October 2020, following its ban after the outbreak of Covid-19 in March 2020.
”It is our intention to continue with this program, we had it on schedule in 2022 and had it on schedule in 2021 but we couldn’t implement it because of the prevailing situation of Covid,” Lubega said .
The tournament that would previously last a month attracted teams from seven districts that make up Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom including: Kagadi, Kakumiro, Kiryandongo, Bulliisa, Hoima, Masindi and Kibaale.
Lubega said that CNOOC has been the biggest sponsor of the tournament as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
“… When the situation for Covid-19 calms down, we should be able to continue with this program,” Lubega said .
The teams should start preparations.
