Airtel Uganda Managing Director, Anwar Soussa has quit the telecom firm under unclear circumstances. But the company said his quitting is as a result of his personal decision to take up a new and exciting opportunity outside Airtel.
Soussa joined Airtel Uganda in June 2016, replacing Tom Gutjahr, who left the telecom firm at the end of May 2016 to pursue other opportunities.
In a statement issued on Thursday evening, Airtel said Soussa will be replaced by VG Somasekhar, who is currently serving in the role of Director – Special Projects, Airtel Africa.VG Somasekhar set to return as Airtel Uganda Managing Director
Somasekhar is returning to Airtel Uganda for a second stint, having steered tAirtel Uganda from December 2010 to February 2014, during which period he oversaw the Airtel-Warid merger – the first telecom merger in Uganda. He further strengthened the brand through strategic partnerships.
He holds a graduate degree in Commerce from University of Madras, Executive Education Program from Harvard Business School and Thunderbird University – Arizona.
When Soussa was appointed Airtel Uganda boss, the company said he was expected to provide further impetus to Airtel’s mobile commerce services while ensuring availability of the fast growing data network and providing winning customer service support.
Before joining Airtel, Soussa had a long stint in the telecommunication industry in Africa. He joined Airtel from MTN Cyprus where he served as the Chief Operating Officer.
Airtel Uganda says under his leadership, the telecom has won a number of accolades including Best performing OpCo in Africa, Best OpCo in data growth and Best OpCo in distribution excellence at the 2017 Dubai Conclave.
