ICT Ministry Wants Taxes On Computers, Tablets & Smartphones Reduced To Foster Innovations

The Ministry of ICT & National Guidance wants taxes on ICT related devices reduced

The Ministry of ICT is in talks with the Ministry of Finance to reduce taxes on IT related devices that are used to drive innovations and digital skilling of the young people who are mostly in low earning capacity in the country.

This was revealed by  Amina Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, while delivering the keynote address at the 6th Swarm Summit 2024 on business startups held at Four-Point hotel by Sheraton in Kampala.

Zawedde said that the government is mindful of the biggest part of the population cannot afford the high cost of devices and the internet, noting that there is a need to review tax measures to have fewer taxes devices on the market to promote digital innovations and skilling to pay the way for more business growth in form of startups among the youth.

She said that the Ministry of Finance should work with parliament to have tax waivers on digital devices like computers, tablets and mobile phones to attract more IT related manufacturing and assembling factories within the country.
