Carolyn Acuga, a third-year bachelor of science in nursing student has won the Muni University Guild President elections, becoming the first female guild leader, since the university became operational in 2015. She becomes the 7th guild president of the university, replacing the outgoing Guild President, Aron Gamis.
According to the official results announced by the university electoral Commission, Acuga polled 224 votes defeating her opponent Syson Natweta, a third-year bachelor of science in education student who got 171 votes. Ten votes cast were invalid.
Acuga hails from Bardege Layibi Divisio in Gulu City and is a former student of Sacred Heart Secondary School Gulu. She served as minister of finance in the outgoing university guild council. According to Acuga, her immediate priority will be to form an inclusive guild cabinet.
The chairman electoral commission, George Eyak, said the voting exercise was largely free and fair and the turn-up of students for the exercise was good despite their earlier fears that most students would abscond the exercise due to the current Easter holiday.
Arua Resident City Commissioner, Alice Akello commended the students for the peaceful elections, saying that guild elections are important for grooming future leaders for the nation.
Stella Amandru Wawa, the dean of students, says plans are underway to inaugurate the new leaders in the office.
According to the election roadmap, the swearing-in of the new guild government is expected to take place on Saturday next week.
