The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II
Buganda Kingdom loyalists are worried about the numerous court cases against the Kabaka Ronald Mutebi II over land. The Katikiro Peter Mayiga says there are currently 40 land cases against the Kabaka in the courts of law.
He notes that several Buganda loyalists have expressed concern about the decision by some subjects of the Kingdom to drag the King to court. Mayiga however, allays the fears of the Kingdom subjects, saying the Constitution of Uganda recognizes Kabaka as corporation sole, which means he can sue and be sued.
While addressing the Lukiiko at Bulange Mengo on Monday afternoon, Mayiga directed the Kingdom Attorney General, David Mpanga to explain the matter to the kingdom subjects.
Last year, City Lawyer, Male Mabirizi filed a suit before high court challenging Kabaka’s authority over land. In his suit, Mabirizi wants court to declare that contrary to popular opinion, the Kabaka is not a land lord but only a trustee of the land in the kingdom.
In another suit filed in April 2017, Mabirizi wants court to issue temporary orders stopping Buganda Land Board from issuing lease titles to bonafide bibanja holders. As a result, High Court Judge Patricia Basaza ordered Kabaka Mutebi to produce bank statements of all the money the Mengo administration has collected from people living on the kingdom land.
Court also demanded the particulars of all mailo land returned by government, bearing the name of the county, block and the plot numbers and details of all those occupying the kingdom land and the amount each occupant has paid. Mabirizi said he wanted the financial documents for inspection and internalization to enable him prosecute his petition properly.

It is better for Buganda to settle the matter outside court. A traditional king should not be exposed. Next step he will be subjected to a witness stand. Am a trained lawyer /not even a Muganda and I know the implications of cross examination of the king. It’s the kingdom to lose. No.2. The katikiro brandishing that man is bound to cause problems as in creating no rooms for negotiating yet everything seems in the young man’s favor. However, both sides should be cautioned. Judgment can be either way. But if either way. Who is bound to lose most. I think it’s the kingdom in respect of revenue. My opinions
