Weeding Out Wrong Elements: Fingerprinting Of Guns Begins

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General David Muhoozi has revealed that the fingerprinting of guns in the country has started with an aim of weeding out wrong elements within government and private security agencies.

He made the remarks on Wednesday while appearing before the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee of Parliament where UPDF had been summoned to inform the August House about the state of security in the country.

This was after Kilak South MP, Gilbert Olanya expressed concerns over the many guns being brought into Uganda through the porous borders and gave a case of South Sudanese.

“That is a valid concern, but those guns come through our porous borders and in the logic of the Commander in Chief, he was saying let us narrow and ease investigations by first knowing the guns within the country. And in that respect, we are starting with Police and private security organizations,” Muhoozi said.

He added: “They are already underway fingerprinting and once we do those in the hands of security, then at least because sometimes we have wrong elements within us who commit crime you can easily trace it and later we can find a solution to guns that come from outside the country.”

It should be noted that during his address to Parliament after the death of Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga, the Commander in Chief, President Yoweri Museveni  admitted that the nation had been infiltrated with many illegal guns and ordered all security forces to fingerprint all guns as a measure to fight the rampant assassinations that have rocked the country.
