The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has revealed that the nation collected Shs69bn in revenue from visitors visiting the national parks across the country.
The revelation was made by Sam Mwandha, Executive Director of UWA in his Christmas message, where he detailed the performance the Authority in 2021/2022.
He wrote, “Visitor numbers to our protected areas increased to 265,539 collecting Shs69Bn in the FY2021/2022 compared to 103,812 visitors and Shs21Bn in 2020/2021. We conducted 19,360 patrols across the country, arrested 2837 suspects and recovered 26,578 assorted poaching implements and assorted wildlife products.”
Mwandha further informed that the Authority took a strategic decision on strengthening wildlife protection, tackling wildlife crime, mitigating the negative impacts of human-wildlife conflict which saw the Authority disburse Shs9.5Bn revenue shared with our communities.
UWA also revealed that the Authority had signed concession agreements to develop high-end tourism accommodations in Murchison Falls National Park and Kyambura Wildlife Reserve in Queen Elizabeth National Park to offer services to visitors who love luxury services.
