Save The Children Clarifies On Nyombi’s Contract Termination

Save the Children has denied allegations labeled against it by its former employee- Jimmy Kato Nyombi, who claims that he was sacked due to his HIV positive status.

This site recently published a story in which Nyombi made the above allegations.

We promised to publish Save the Children’s side of the story as soon as we get it.

Responding to our email, Egberta Van Lith, the Save the Children Country Manager noted that Nyombi’s claim has already been heard and rejected by the Industrial Court of Uganda.

“The decision to terminate Mr Nyombi’s contract in 2005 was made solely due to his recurring violations of his terms of employment. He was dismissed for repeated breaches of contract, negligence of duties, and intent to defraud the organisation,” the letter dated May 14, 2018 (but received by Business Focus on May 21, 2018) reads in part.

“This decision was made after he was given various written warnings for serious offenses,” the letter adds.

Van Lith adds that Nyombi’s legal claim was filed more than nine years after his dismissal, and this claim was dismissed by the Court in February 2018, with a ruling in favour of Save the Children.

“No appeal against this decision has been made,” the organisation says, adding: “Save the Children is an equal employer. We do not and would never discriminate against any staff or individual based on their health status.”

As Business Focus, we apologise to Save the Children for publishing the story without waiting for their side of the story and for any inconveniences the story might have caused to the organisation.

We remain committed to fair and balanced reporting as journalistic standards dictate.
