MPs: ‘State House Officials Blocking Us From Meeting Museveni’

A group of Members of Parliament have accused State House workers of hiding their letters addressed to President Yoweri Museveni and in the process denying them an opportunity to meet him.

This was revealed by Rose Mutonyi, the Chairperson of Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday while meeting Okello Oryem, the State Minister Foreign Affairs, who had been summoned to answer queries relating to administration of Uganda’s Missions abroad.

Mutonyi said Museveni’s continued appointment of political failures as ambassadors has not helped the country.  She noted that efforts by her Committee members to meet President Museveni over the matter have been fruits as result of her letters being binned by State House officials she didn’t reveal.

“Last night (Monday), His Excellency (Museveni) called me and he asked, ‘where have you been?’ I said your Excellency, I am an MP. He said yes, but you disappeared,” Mutonyi said, adding that that she told him how she has been writing letters seeking to meet him but in vain.

“…Later on he called me and told me that nobody has ever told him about the letters. The letters get stuck from somewhere. I think some people think I am going to bother him. I am an MP, I don’t need anything from him,” she revealed.

Oryem advised the lawmakers to continue pursuing the route of meeting Museveni, noting that what he knows the Committee on Foreign Affairs interacts with the President.

Among the issues raised before Oryem was the outstanding arrears on contributions (subscription fees) to International organisations which has increased to  Shs49bn as of April 2017. However, Oryem told the MPs that the figure has since increased to Shs60bn.
