MP Magyezi: ‘Poison, Death Reports Have Disturbed My Peace’

Infamous Igara West MP, Raphael Magyezi has called for strengthening of laws governing social media use in Uganda after reports of his sickness and death.

Over the weekend, social media platforms were awash with reports that the lawmaker had been poisoned, with others claiming that he had died.

In a media interview on Tuesday, Magyezi said: “There was malicious information that I have been poisoned and on Sunday, I died. Now I am here, you must be listening to a ghost. I don’t know what one would benefit from such nonsense. It is total rubbish; it has no background, no basis.  You are disturbing the peace of people, families. I think it is behavioral think because why should you do something that is devilish?”

He further explained that news of his demise is a question of misuse of rights and freedoms and it shows NRM has given a lot of freedom, saying in some other countries, once one starts such a story, you have to account for it.

“We must educate the users of social media to avoid falling into the trap of misusing this platform. We have to strengthen the punitive measures of people for anybody who wants to cause disruptions in society,” Magyezi said.

Magyezi shot to lime light last year after he came out supporting the divisive lifting of the 75 year Presidential Age limit cap and his decision to table the private member’s bill earned him wrath and love from the public in equal measure.
