Here To Stay! Uganda Telecom Launches US$3,500 IT Innovation Challenge

Uganda Telecom Limited in partnership with Hive Colab Monday launched a Hackathon, an ideation event  that will bring together a number of IT professionals and developers and allow them showcase their potential, skills and ideas.

At the launch, Bemanya Twebaze, the Administrator, Uganda Telecom remarked “Every year, thousands of IT graduates are released into the workforce. These brilliant minds have enormous potential and creativity and often need such platforms to showcase their ideas and skills. That’s why this Hackathon was created; we are doing this because we feel that innovation is best demonstrated by bringing ideas to life and the best way to find out if an idea is good is to try it out. I therefore invite all skilled developers to sign up for this Hackathon…”

He further mentioned that “As a key player in the ICT sector, we recognize the potential of IT innovations and how they have shaped our world today. And as a proudly Ugandan brand, we are always looking for opportunities to partner with local talent and brilliant minds and this Hackathon is just one of those opportunities. The big news is developer(s) of the winning prototype from this Hackathon will not only be rewarded with the grand prize  of USD 3,500 (about Shs12.5m) but their prototype will be actively developed into a full-fledged website.”

Barbara Birungi Mutabazi, Cofounder and Executive Director of Hive Colab expressed her gratitude and thanked Uganda Telecom for this partnership and setting a good precedent for other companies and organisations in the ICT sector.

She said “As Hive Colab, we have held similar events in the past but this partnership is of greater sentimental value to us because this is a Uganda Company, supporting local talent and a key player in the ICT sector. We are looking forward to making new connections and discovering new talent. If you are a developer, I encourage you to sign up for this hackathon, this is a great platform for developers to sharpen and learn from one another.”

Registration for the Hackathon started on Monday 21st August 2017 and will remain open for two weeks; closing on Friday 1st September 2017.
