Did you know that beans are Uganda’s leading export to East African Community (EAC) member countries?

Well, according to 2017/18 figures shared by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) recently, beans beat maize to emerge Uganda’s leading export to EAC. This analysis is based on the amount of foreign exchange a particular crop earns the country.

In 2017/18, Uganda exported 349.12 tons of beans to EAC earning the country US$123.2m (Shs461bn).

It is followed by maize that saw Uganda earn US$118.47m (Shs443.3bn) from 568.58 tons of maize exported to EAC countries in 2017/18.

In third place is tea.

In 2017/18, Uganda exported 66.81 tons of tea to EAC and earned US$90.9m (Shs340.1bn) from it.

Sugar is Uganda’s 4th most exported item to EAC. In 2017/18, Uganda exported 99.24 tons of sugar, earning US$64.46m (Shs241.1bn) from it. 

Animal feeds come in the 5^th place. Uganda exported 267.61 tons of animal feeds to EAC countries in 2017/18 and earned US$58.9m (Shs220.3bn) from it.

Sorghum is also among the top 10 most exported items to EAC countries. In 2017/18, Uganda earned US$54.8m (Shs205.03bn) from 86.13 tons of sorghum exported to EAC countries.

Milk and Cream take the 7^th place. Uganda exported 79.95 tons of milk and cream to EAC countries and earned US$54.06m (Shs202.29bn) from it.

Brans, sharps and other residues are number eight. Uganda exported 229.87 tons of the above items and earned US$47.26m (Shs176.8bn) from them.

Raw tobacco is the 9^th most exported item to EAC countries. Uganda exported 16.14 tons to EAC countries in 2017/18 and earned US$43.5m (Shs162.75bn) from it.

Fish fillets and other fish meat complete the 10 most exported items to EAC countries by Uganda.

Uganda earned US$42.38m (Shs158.5bn) from her 0.43 tons of fish fillets and other fish meat exported to EAC countries in 2017/18.

Going by the above figures, it means that Uganda earned Shs2.6 trillion from the 10 items exported to EAC countries in 2017/18.
