CSOs Urge Govt To Reduce Wasteful Expenditure

Uganda’s Civil society budget advocacy group (CSBAG) has called upon Government to reduce what they called wasteful expenditure as portrayed in the 2017/18 financial year draft budget.

Local news agency, URN, reports that in the proposed budget, items like allowances, workshops, seminars, welfare, entertainment, special meals and drinks, travel abroad, hire of venues and donations will take shillings 1.4 trillion of the budget which is 6.9% of the available expenditure resources of 20 trillion shillings.

This is higher than the proposed budget for areas such as Agriculture, tourism, trade and industry and social development with a combined allocation of 1.2 trillion shillings.

CSBAG Coordinator Julius Mukunda says that 52.4% decrease in the budget for welfare and entertainment from 91.2 billion to 43.4 billion has been undermined by increase in the budget for special meals and drinks from 99 billion to 139 billion shillings.
