URA Burns Shs2.3bn Impounded Goods

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Tuesday set on fire impounded items worth over Shs2.3bn.

The destruction took place at a facility in Nakasajja, Wakiso district.

The items impounded over the past few months were;  33,560 kilograms of banned cosmetics valued at over sh621m, 38, 640 kilograms of Mekako soap containing mercury valued at over sh715m and 21, 740 kilograms of cigarettes valued at over sh1bn.

“Desist from smuggling. It leads to unfair competition and some of the smuggled items for example cosmetics are harmful to humans,” URA said in a statement, adding: “We have to protect local manufacturers and those who comply with tax obligations. Please note that other than revenue collection, we protect society against harmful/dangerous items.”
