Tension As Age Limit Bill Misses Out On Today’s Order Paper

The controversial Constitution (Amendment) (no. 2) Bill, 2017 isn’t on today’s order paper, Business Focus reports.

According to the leaked Order Paper of the 16th sitting of the 2nd meeting of the 2nd session of the 10th parliament of Uganda scheduled Tuesday, 12th December 2017, the major business today will be a  report of the Ugandan delegation to the world young leaders assembly in the USA from 7th – 17th August 2017, Education Service Commission annual report – financial year 2016/2017 and Health Service Commission annual report – financial year 2016/2017.

The sitting that commences at 2:00 P.M will see the Anti-Counterfeiting Goods Bill, 2015 receive its second reading.

The Constitution (Amendment) (no. 2) Bill, 2017 that was brought by Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi will return to the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, according to today’s order paper.

The Bill seeks to amend Article 102 (b) of the 1995 Constitution by allowing a person above 75 years of age as well as those below 35 to stand for President.

In a related development, MPs in support of removing age limits were Tuesday morning summoned to Prime Minister’s Office for a closed door meeting. Unconfirmed reports indicate the 305 MPs on the list are set to receive Shs200m each to vote in favour of amending the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Police and other security agencies have deployed heavily in Kampala ahead of the tabling of age limit bill report by Parliamentary Legal Committee scheduled for tomorrow.
