Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers have reportedly taken over security of Arua district following chaotic scenes on Sunday evening as residents received the body of assassinated MP Ibrahim Abiriga.
SFC is an elite unit of the army charged with protecting the president, his family and key military installations.
There were reports that the president is expected to attend the burial of Abiriga today. Abiriga, the former Arua Municipality MP was assassinated on Friday evening on his way back home. He was killed together with his bodyguard who has since been identified as his brother.
On Sunday, angry Arua residents forcefully removed the casket containing the remains of Abiriga from an ambulance before marching with it throughout the town prompting police to fire teargas and live ammunition in the air to disperse the crowd.
Later, the crowd descended on the late MP’s home and vandalised all chairs and tents that had been put in place for mourners.
