Security Key For Oil To Benefit Ugandans – Gen Angina

The Deputy Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), Lt. Gen Charles Angina has warned that unless Uganda ensures stability, the country will experience the infamous oil curse.

Angina made this warning on Wednesday while speaking at the ongoing Oil and Gas Convention held at Serena Hotel, Kampala

“The security element is absolutely vital in the whole planning process of this oil sector. We appeal to all key players collaborate with us to enable effective wealth for Ugandans,” Angina said.

Dr. Elly Karuhanga, the chairman of the Uganda Chamber of Mines and Petroleum  (UCMP) also emphasised the point citing oil rich middle countries that have been casualties of the oil curse.

“It is a very strategic resource and Uganda is situated in a high risk area in EAfrica. Right in the middle of some unstable countries,” Karuhanga said.

He also warned Ugandans not come any closer to the oil and gas sector if they don’ have the necessary skills.

Karuhanga made reference to oil disasters like the gulf of Mexico oil spill of 2010 that affected top global oil company, British Petroleum  (BP).

Joram Mugume, the former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added his voice to those stressing that stability is important if Uganda is to benefit from the oil and gas industry.

He however, said that it could be another way of Uganda strengthening her diplomatic ties with regional countries.
