Promising start for new Boxing president

Youthful Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) newly elected President Moses Muhangi has started on a journey to rebuild the gold medal sport of Uganda.

Muhangi, who was elected during an assembly at Lugogo overseen by AIBA, the world boxing governing body, has started with emphasis on re-branding activities.

On Tuesday, he unveiled a refurbished office at Lugogo which has been repainted with legendary boxer John Mugabi ‘The Beast’, the poster boy on the federation office.

He later on Wednesday met referee judges as he seeks to build capacity and gain ground.

Last week, he attended the Extraordinary Congress of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) held in Dubai over the weekend as an observer.

He told Sports Focus that he wants to restore confidence by building strong foundations.

“We must make sure that we regain people’s confidence in boxing by doing things right,” Muhangi said on Wednesday.

The sport has endured a fair share of its troubles. Although outgoing president Kenneth Gimugu restored some sanity when he came into office 2013, activities have been going on slowly.

But Muhangi is concerned with the small matter of the National Council of Sports (NCS), who are yet to endorse his election yet he thinks the Commonwealth Games are around the corner. Boxing was allocated a share of six boxers for the Gold Coast Games that will be held between 4 and 15 April 2018.

“We are planning to start the training camp but we await clearance from NCS that will enable us mobilize resources and have the team ready,” Muhangi noted.
