Opposition To Magyezi: It Is Clear Ugandans Want Age Limit Stayed

Opposition MPs have attacked Igara West MP, Raphael Magyezi over his demand to have the Legal and Parliamentary Committee reconstituted, arguing that he doesn’t have the powers to do so.

Magyezi early this week said the Committee members are biased about the controversial Constitution Amendment Bill (No2) 2017 better known as Age Limit Bill and therefore can’t have a fair hearing of views.

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Winnie Kiiza told the press on Friday that Magyezi’s worries about MPs are baseless because Ugandans have Presidential Age limit.

The Kasese Woman MP wondered how Magyezi would cry foul yet NRM has majority numbers on the Committee and Parliament.

It should be noted that the Legal Committee which is set to start processing the Constitutional Amendment Bill on October 31st 2017 has 23 MPs;13 NRM, Six Independents, FDC two and DP two.

“… If the Committee is hostile, it reflects the hostility in the country side and that is the reason he should consider withdrawing the Bill because it is a reflection of what is happening in the public,” Kiiza said.

She added: “One thing is clear; Magyezi has no powers over which MP should be designated on which Committee. The powers to designate and withdraw MPs lie in the hands of the Party Whips. The person he should have cried to and in private was her whip to say you know what, we have hit a snag.”
