New Shs36bn Ultra-Modern Hospital Opens In Kampala

Uganda’s health sector is in the news more often than not, for the wrong reasons. It cannot be overstated that as a country, we ought to do better. While it is the norm to cry foul to the government, a good health sector is a concerted effort by not just the government, but the private sector too.

It is against this background that a new ultra-modern UMC Victoria Hospital gracing the skies of Bukoto, a Kampala suburb has opened up.

UMC Victoria Hospital boasts of Uganda’s first private Cardiac Catheterization Theater. It is also well-equipped with a CT Scanner, MRI, Modular Operating Theatres, Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Dialysis Care and other key clinical specialty units.

Inside the hospital

“Our premise as UMC Victoria Hospital is to provide quality healthcare with world-class facilities so that patients do not have to incur costs of flying abroad but receive specialized treatment here in Uganda. This is why we have put in place facilities like a state-of-the-art laboratory and modular operating theatres,” Dr. Anurag Shah – Managing Director of UMC Victoria Hospital said.

Right from the reception area to the treatment rooms, it is evident that the hospital is quality-conscious and  customer-centric.

Mukesh Meharwal, UMC Victoria Hospital’s Head of Marketing stressed that the hospital is meant to provide a comfortable atmosphere for the patient at all times.

“Hygiene is key and our wards are fitted with state-of-the-art facilities like air conditioning, instant alarms to access medical personnel at all times and so much more. These are the conditions that facilitate a quick recovery” he added.

However, it does not stop with the patient. The hospital has extended this comfort to the patient’s attendants, relatives and  friends.  All patient rooms, inclusive of the ICU rooms, are fitted with cozy waiting lounges.

Another impressive point to note is the fact that great emphasis has been put on mother and child care with an entire floor dedicated to this. Consultation Rooms, Pre-labour Monitoring Rooms, Labour Rooms and Post Labour Patient Rooms are all on this floor. There is also a Pediatric ICU on the floor.

This facility is part of a chain of hospitals operating under Univic Medical Centre group. According to Dr. Anurag Shah, it cost over $10 Million (UShs36bn) to set up this state-of-the-art hospital.

The hospital that is already operating will officially be launched by President Yoweri Museveni at a date yet to be fixed.

For now, it remains to be seen whether UMC Victoria Hospital will live to match its service delivery with its high quality facilities.
