KCCA Closes 9 Butcheries For Using Mortuary Chemicals

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in partnership with Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) Thursday closed nine butcheries across Kampala for using dangerous chemicals including formalin (used to preserve dead bodies) to preserve meat.

Most of the affected butcheries are located in Kalerwe and Ntinda.

Dr. Emilian Ahimbisibwe, KCCA’s Supervisor of Animal Production said the butcheries were shut down for failing to adhere to the minimum health and quality standards.

He added that the shutdown will continue until the standards are met.

“The operation is a fact-finding mission and to check the compliance of butcheries with the required Public Health Standards,” KCCA tweeted on its official twitter handle.

The closure of the nine butcheries followed a joint operation involving KCCA and UNBS on butcheries across the city — checking the hygienic state of the meat and the butchers, structural standards of the butcheries and investigating meat preservation mechanisms.

KCCA has in the past said that meat in many Kampala places is unsafe. It has also in the past closed supermarkets including Shoprite for selling rotten meat.
